Khmer Art Covers:
The covers of some of the major art magazines featuring Southeast Asian art and more specifically Khmer art are reproduced here. Some are fifty years old, including the quarterly-published Oriental Art Magazine from the Summer of 1975 that featured the bronze Kneeling Female Deity from the Asia House Gallery exhibition. In the Autumn of 1966, the same magazine cover focused on the figure of a Female Deity in stone which was part of the Avery Brundage collection. Arts of Asia Magazine, published out of Hong Kong, featured three covers with Khmer art, the first in May-June 1981 with three stone heads displayed. In the March-April 1994 edition, Khmer antiquities in the new galleries of the Metropolitan Museum in New York were shown, while the Royal Palace of Cambodia was featured in the September-October 1998 magazine.
The third magazine to cover Asian art since 1969 has been Orientations, again from Hong Kong though distributed worldwide. In April 2014, they focused on a major exhibition at The Met in New York called Lost Kingdoms, with a photo of a Pre-Angkor Uma the cover star. The National Museum of Cambodia’s statue of Varuna on Hamsa was the cover of the November-December 2006 magazine with a series of articles by Helen Jessup, Hab Touch and Ang Choulean. Art expert and Director of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Sherman Lee made the cover of the January-February 2005 edition of Orientations next to a stone Khmer head, while a kneeling bronze female deity from The Met was the cover picture for the March 1994 edition. Durga as the Slayer of the Buffalo Demon, from the Cleveland Museum was the cover star of the February 1990 magazine, with a face from the Bayon temple gracing the September 1981 issue. A mysterious face in shadows was the cover for the May 1970 magazine. These magazine covers were the public face of Angkor and Cambodia to many art connoisseurs around the world.Credit By :Andy Brouwer
