Khmer Art Overseas:
In February 2023, I focused a few posts on the half a dozen Khmer antiquities from the online brochure of antiques business, A & J Speelman of London, whose gallery specialized in Asian artworks. The family antiques company stretches back three generations to 19th century Holland, and extended into England at the turn of the following century. They tout their collection as being original and authentic though the large sandstone statues all displayed signs of potential looting from Cambodia’s remote temples, with missing arms as well as feet, as heavy pedestals were often left in-situ because of their weight. The dealer offered up no sale price for their Khmer artifacts, or any provenance details. I returned to review the Speelman website this week and their Southeast Asian page no longer exists. Either they quietly sold their Khmer collection or perhaps the widespread media reports about looted Khmer art has turned up the heat and caused them to remove the items from their sales catalogue. Here is a reminder of the artworks they were selling.Credit By :Andy Brouwer
