The god Vishnu, known as the preserver, is most often depicted with four arms and this sandstone example dates to the twelfth century Angkor Wat art style. He’s suffered a lot of damage over the centuries, losing all four arms and parts of both legs, but has retained his head and offers us a classic example of his place in time. The sampot has a double fishtail and pockets, with a decorative diadem and his hair drawn up into a towering chignon. Our clean-shaven deity featured in the book, Thai and Cambodian Sculpture from the 6th to 14th Centuries, written by Wolfgang Felten and Martin Lerner, and published in 1989. He was in an unnamed private collection, where he remains today.Credit By :Andy Brouwer
