The Rise and Fall of Yadanabon Mandalay (1857-1885),Myanmar

The Rise and Fall of Yadanabon Mandalay (1857-1885),Myanmar 🇲🇲

Burmese Traditional Costume in the Late Konbaung Period, Also Known as Yadanabon Mandalay (1859-1885)

As with many former capitals of Burma, the establishment of Mandalay was driven by the vision of the reigning monarch. On 13 February 1857, King Mindon founded the new royal capital, Yadanabon Mandalay, at the base of Mandalay Hill. By June of the same year, the royal palace from the former capital, Amarapura, was carefully dismantled and transported by elephants to the new site. The construction of the palace compound was completed two years later, on 23 May 1859.

For the following 26 years, Mandalay served as the final royal capital of the Konbaung dynasty, representing the last independent Burmese kingdom before it was annexed by the British Empire. The city's role as the heart of Burmese monarchy came to an end on 28 November 1885, when the British captured Mandalay, sending the last king, Thibaw Min, and his queen, Supayalat, into exile in India.
