Discovering the Rich History and Culture of Luang Prabang ,LAOS UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang: This city has a rich history dating back to 698 AD and has been a royal capital and residence for Lao kings for centuries, including the original capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom. This powerful kingdom was also known as the Kingdom of a Million Elephants and its name reflects this, with "lan" meaning million, "xang" meaning elephant, "hom" meaning parasol, and "khao" meaning white. After the Lan Xang Kingdom split in the 1700s, Luang Prabang became the capital of an independent kingdom. It was later the royal residence of Laos under French rule and after independence, the King of Luang Prabang became the head of state of the Kingdom of Laos before the revolution in 1975.
